21st Century Lesbian Trailer Trash

These are the mad musings of a middle aged woman, dyke, nurse, poet. I have a dog, a cat, a mobile home, and delusions of grandeur.

Surviving the Silence: Black Women's Stories of Rape

In this "intelligent," "stunning," and "honest" book, Charlotte Pierce-Baker weaves together the accounts of black women who have been raped and who have felt that they had to remain silent in order to protect themselves and their race.

It opens with the author's harrowing and courageous account of her rape and includes the stories of the author's own family's response, plus the voices of black men who have supported rape survivors.

From Justice 4 Two Sisters:

On March 14, 2006 two African-American women were allegedly raped, sodomized, and racially terrorized by white members of the Duke University Men's Lacrosse team at a party they were hired to dance for.. This site serves as a watchdog, information hub, and activism vehicle to ensure these young women receive the justice they deserve.

Rape is a crime of violence that I find particularly abhorrent. Having been raped myself at a young age, it left a stain upon my soul that will never be washed completely clean.

Doubly abhorrent to me is the idea of privileged young white men visiting rape upon young women who are oppressed socially, economically, and historically. These [alleged] young victims are black, female, and exotic dancers. In every arena the larger society views them as "less than."

The [alleged] perpetrators are privileged young white males. Every white woman in this country ought to be outraged at the thought that these sorts of master-slave reenactments continue to be rights of passage for our young men in 21st century America. For it is surely indicative of a deeper cancer that eats at our humanity on a daily basis.

Rachel features an ongoing discussion about this case. Anyone who has an interest in the point of view of a young college professor on these issues might want to drop by her site.

Thanks for the link to the book, I will have to order it. Rape is such a hard subject for me. I never put thought into the fact that race can make a difference in it.

Sounds like a must read. Any rape victim that is not somewhere on the level of "Nun" still seems to be viewed by society as "asking for it". Few things piss me off quite as much as hearing someone say "Well, why was she where she was? Why did she drink so much?" I used to think it was a case of man's inhumanity to man; now, I'm convinced it's general stupidity.

p.s. Stopped by via JustMe's place. She has good things to say about you ... I agree! Great blog.

Su-May you crack me up (on your blog, not in your response to me). Do you write poetry? There's a lot of it in your posting. In a kind of a rap poetry way.

Just Me, I think for most of us white folks, we don't generally put things into that perspective until we are presented with the opportunity to think about it. It's why I think it's important, as a white person, to keep talking about things like this. Someone once did a study that showed, for example, that a white man will not listen to any woman's accusations of sexism. It has to come from another white male. By the same token, when the white person protests racist remarks from another white person or a straight person protests homophobic remarks from another straight person, the "offending" party is more likely to listen.

Great to meet you curiouskat. If I got to the right profile, we share an amazing amount of interests. :o)
