21st Century Lesbian Trailer Trash

These are the mad musings of a middle aged woman, dyke, nurse, poet. I have a dog, a cat, a mobile home, and delusions of grandeur.

When Someone Calls You a Bad Name

Overwhelm them with intellect.

Some nimrod referred to Jenn (of Reappropriate fame) the "C" word in the comments section of another blog. How's that for having the courage of your convictions?

For those of you not in the loop, the "C" word is cunt. Now, as a woman with the vocabulary of a sailor, I have to say that I find the word cunt to be one of the nastiest, most demeaning things one can call a woman. And I never, ever use the word myself.

Even reprobates like me have their limits.

But thank you Jenn for opening my eyes to yet another way of taking back your power.

She is a wise and talented woman. I loved that.

I hate when people toss the C word around carelessly. It weakens the impact of the word for those who truly deserve the title.

Haven't opened the link yet but I will. I am probably one of the very few people that the word just doesn't bother me, if only b/c I wont let it, I refuse to give it any power. I recently got that title as well. Off to go read now.

I happen to love the "C" word. Even if it's shouted in anger, it's a badge I can claim proudly. "Yes, I am a cunt!" I should have a tee-shirt printed that reads, "Cunt, and proud of it!"

It is positive to me in its sexual context and in its strong, opinionated woman who pisses narrow-minded people off context. It is especially powerful to me whispered in my ear at a given, personal moment. What's not to love about the word?

Women of the world, claim your cunts!

Love the C word. The reclaiming cunt tshirt from the Vagina Monologues several years ago is still one of my favorite shirts. People on the streets spend a lot of time trying to figure out what it says. They often don't get it and ask. And aren't happy when I explain it to them. Or they figure it out and then blush. One woman lectured TW on the shirt in Joann Fabrics so we no longer shop there. Screw that, I'm proud of the word, it's mine and nobody is taking it away. ;-)

But you don't have to like it Pam. I'm sure you love words that I don't. :-)

That's similar to gay men who have claimed the word "fag" for themselves. Here in San Francisco we have a club called "Fag Fridays". Just as long as a straight man doesn't dare us the word!

Such a powerful word, I don't use it either. But I LOVE to think of myself as a bitch ;)

I think that the reason I don't like the word is because it is something that is used to denigrate and devalue female sexuality.

Whereas, for example, the F word denotes an Act, the C word is used as a slur not just against women but against exactly that which identifies them as female. I don't have a problem with the word Dyke because it does not reference female genitalia. Don't ask me why pussy doesn't bother me. Perhaps because it is a softer word that is often used as a term of endearment.

While I understand and even embrace the idea of reclaiming words, there are some that I cannot stomach. I really hate to hear black folk refer to one and other by the N word also.

I could probably write a very long post about all of this but then, it would only be my explanation of how my experience led me to think as I do.

I too have the sailor syndrome, but I never use the c word, and rarely use the word twat. For a pussy fan, that is probably strange, but I think cunt and twat sound just plain nasty.
